Product Review: Beautyblender

I don't know what I did before this little pink spongy egg of goodness came into my life. It's called the Beautyblender, and it has revolutionized the way that I (and many others!) apply makeup.

What is it? Unlike the conventional makeup sponges of yesteryear, the Beautyblender is a revolutionary cosmetic sponge that has no sharp edges. Whereas the traditional cosmetic wedge leaves streaks behind, the unique design of the Beautyblender ensures a perfect blend every.single.time. It really is foolproof.

How does it work? To use the Beautyblender, simply dip it into your foundation and bounce it against your skin. That's it - no particular advanced skill required. The stippling technique results in a smooth flawless finish, comparable to the dot pattern of airbrushing. You can choose to use it wet or dry. The key to using any tool with success is trial and error - find out what works for you!

The Beautyblender is soft and light, so I especially love to use the pointed end of the sponge on my clients' delicate under-eye area to blend concealer to perfection. It's also my go-to applicator for cream blushes and liquid foundations. I still use my brushes for cream foundations, but different strokes for different folks, eh? GET IT. Brush. Stroke. Brush strokes. Man, I crack myself up.

It's HOW much?! At $19.95 for one sponge, the price seems pretty steep, but I haven't mentioned a really important detail: they're reusable! It's really crucial to purchase the cleanser - really, don't try to save some dough by skimping on the cleanser, which was specifically formulated for use with the Beautyblender; you'll just shorten the lifespan of your sponge. I know some makeup artists who have been able to use one Beautyblender for 3 months before having to replace it!

Think pink... err, green! If you're like me, you will love the fact that when you're ready to replace your Beautyblender, you simply send your old sponge in and they will recycle it for you!

Latex-free, odor-free, non-allergenic, reusable, recyclable... need I go on? Go get one!

Question: did my shoes come off in the plane crash?

So, I don't wear foundation...it makes my face feel oily. Any alternatives? Or should I be wearing foundation and am not using it right?

Hey, Alissa! I have oily skin, myself, so I use a dual powder foundation (Laura Mercier and Giorgio Armani make great ones). Have you tried a tinted moisturizer? You definitely don't have to wear any foundation if you don't want to, but always moisturize and wear sunscreen. Hope that helps!

Being the [honest] troublemaker...
"It really is foolproof." Well, if I'm doing it right, I still don't see what all the fuss is about because my liquid foundation application looks better w/ a $10 Sephora brush. I find that the Beauty Blender absorbs too much make-up. And maybe it's just my foundation because it's formulated to be super long-lasting, but it takes SO much cleanser to get the pink egg clean. I hate to be a downer, but I still feel this thing was a waste of moola. I don't think I'm using it wrong, just that it's overrated.

You're not a downer! ;) It is foolproof, but that doesn't guarantee that your correct use of the sponge will result in makeup application that YOU love. The Beautyblender is loved by the makeup artist community, and for my purposes, it rocks. If using a brush works for you, then by all means, keep it up! As I said, the key is to find what works for you. As for the cleanser, I don't find that it takes much cleanser to get it clean, but there's a lot of rinsing involved! I'm sorry that the Beautyblender didn't sweep you off of your feet, but I'm still crazy about and highly recommend it. As they say, "to each his own." :)

If anyone's interested in this concept, I just read in the current issue of Marie Claire that Sonia Kashuk makes a product JUST like this for $10. They speak of it quite highly.

It even has the same packaging. Don't know who ripped off whom, but saving $20 always feels nice. :)

You beat me to it, Laura! ;) A few weeks ago, I was reading about the Sonia Kashuk knock-off on a makeup artist forum. The consensus was that it didn't perform as well as the original, but for 10 bucks, I'd say it's worth a shot! Maybe I'll even pick one up and review it.
